Sayaka Shoji was born in Tokyo. Grew up in Siena, Italy. In 1999 Sayaka Shoji became the person ever to win the Paganini International Competition. With the 1729 Stradivarius “Recamier” violin Sayaka Shoji has played with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. Sayaka Shoji has released eleven albums on labels, like Deutsche Grammophon. Sayaka Shoji works with artists from fields, including the sculptor Saburo Teshigawara and the architect Tadao Ando.

Experience Baroque and Contemporary Music at ROHM Theatre Kyoto

This project marks her second collaboration with Hiroshi Sugimoto, following their work on the reading play Nikusei. Sugimoto, a recipient of the Praemium Imperiale and the Officer of the French Order of Arts and Letters, brings his extensive experience in stage design and fine art to construct the performance space. Musical leadership is shared with conductor and harpsichordist Yuto Suzuki, Music Director of Ensemble Genesis and Principal Conductor of Bach Collegium Japan. Ensemble Genesis, founded in 2005 by Suzuki and Yukie Yamaguchi, incorporates both historical period instruments and modern instruments to deliver staged musical programs.

The concert program opens with Jean-Féry Rebel’s 1737 French Baroque ballet score The Four Elements, a piece noted for its avant-garde depiction of chaos resolving into fire, air, water, and earth. The second half features Max Richter’s post-classical work, which quotes roughly 25 percent of Antonio Vivaldi’s original score while constructing a modern, ambient soundscape for solo violin and ensemble.

Attending this concert in Japan offers visitors a chance to see leading Japanese artists synthesize classical music with contemporary stage craft inside one of Kyoto’s premier cultural venues. The integration of period instrument performance practices with minimal electronics and custom visual design creates a live environment tailored to the acoustics of the ROHM Theatre Kyoto.
